Types of billing rates
Before you can use the Compute feature to have the system rate a load automatically, billing rates must be set up in the Rate Schedules application. There are four types of rates:
Primary rates
Primary rates are used for line haul (freight) charges.
Secondary rates
Secondary rates are used for accessorial charges that can be predicted. Secondary rates must be linked to a primary rate. When a primary rate is applied to an order, the system checks to see whether any attached secondary rates match the order. If they do, the secondary rates are applied.
Line item rates
Line item rates are used for accessorial charges that are applied on an “as needed” basis. In other words, line item rates represent accessorial charges that cannot be predicted in advance (detention time, for example). Unlike secondary rates, line item rates are not linked to primary rates. Line item rates are applied only when an accessorial charge is manually added to an order.
Linked line item rates
A linked line item rate can be thought of as a hybrid between secondary and line item rates because it has properties of both:
Like a secondary rate, it must be linked to a primary rate.
Like a line item rate, it is applied only when an invoice detail (line item) is added manually to an order.
