Why do our devices receive CoPilot updates at different times?
When a new version of CoPilot is released, it does not reach all Google Play Store or Apple App Store users simultaneously. Both stores distribute updates using randomized groups to ensure platform stability and allow developers to watch out for technical issues.
Google Play: Staged Rollouts
Google allows us to release updates to a specific percentage of users (e.g., 10%, 50%, or 100%) on a schedule of our choosing.
Apple App Store: Phased Releases
Apple uses a standardized 7-day schedule for updates to users (e.g., Day 1: 1%, Day 3: 5%, Day 5: 20%, Day 7: 100%).
Device requirements
Even if a device is selected in the initial rollout percentage and automatic updates are turned on, the operating system (Android or iOS) will only execute the update when specific device conditions are met. For example:
-
The device needs to be connected to a Wi-Fi network, unless updates over cellular are enabled on the device.
-
The device typically needs to be connected to a charger or the battery level needs to be above a certain threshold (often 60%).
-
Systems generally prioritize updates overnight, or other times the device is not active, to ensure resources are available to the user when needed.
-
There is sufficient storage on the device to download the update and install it.
