Overview of the TotalMail system components

The TotalMail system consists of several component parts: clients, agents, databases, mobile communications vendor link sites, and MCTs.

Clients

TotalMail clients are any computer terminal that is connected to the TotalMail system, using the TotalMail 2000 Viewer as an interface. Clients each have a TotalMail ID, which allows them to receive messages through the system from trucks, other clients and over the internet.

Agents

Agents are pieces of software that perform specific tasks in the sending and receiving of TotalMail messages. Each of the agents often reside on a single computer (usually referred to as the agent machine), but can be separated if necessary.

Delivery agent

The Delivery Agent moves messages from dispatchers to the Transaction, Omnitracs, and TMW MobileComm Poller agents, between the agents, and from the agents back to the clients.

Agent executable: Delivery.exe

Transaction agent

The Transaction Agent is the central processing source for messages sent through the system, for mail going out to trucks and back to dispatchers. Where required, the Transaction Agent also updates the TMWSuite and TotalMail databases with information from form messages.

Agent executable: Tmxactui.exe

Omnitracs agent

The Omnitracs agent handles all TotalMail messages sent to and from trucks over the Omnitracs network. Because Omnitracs messages must be organized in a particular way, the Omnitracs agent reformats TotalMail messages to make them compatible.

Agent executable: Omnitracs.exe

TMW MobileComm Poller Agent

The TMW MobileComm Poller Agent allows you to route your messages over an IP (internet protocol) link to any mobile communications provider.

Agent executable: TMWMPoll.exe

Email agent

The Email Agent allows drivers and logins to send and receive internet email in the TotalMail system.

Agent executable: TMemail.exe

Applications

The TotalMail system includes several different applications that help to configure, connect to the TotalMail and TMWSuite databases, and interface with the dispatchers.

TMXPS

TMXPS (TotalMail to TMWSuite) controls the mapping of selected TotalMail forms to four options found in the MobileComm menu in Dispatch.

Syncdriver

The Syncdriver application allows you to automatically copy all of your resource information from your existing TMWSuite database into TotalMail. It provides a simple way to ensure that all resources added in TMWSuite’s File Maintenance application are also included in TotalMail—without having to manually add them.

TotalMail® 2000 Viewer

The TotalMail 2000 Viewer application is the dispatcher’s main interface to the system. They can use it to manage all incoming messages, to send text and form messages, and to request position reports. application is the dispatcher’s main interface to the system.

TotalMail 2000 Configuration utility

Use the TotalMail 2000 Configuration utility to organize resources and dispatchers into groups, manage security settings, define groups of MCTs/MCUs, and set basic operating parameters.

Databases

The TotalMail system operates using and providing information to the TMWSuite/TotalMail Microsoft SQL database. Form message information (such as position or truckload data) is written to the database by the Transaction Agent.

Mobile communications terminals or units (MCTs/MCUs)

MCTs/MCUs are the physical devices in each truck in the TotalMail system. Consisting of both a driver computer terminal and a satellite receiver unit, MCT’s allow trucks in the system to send and receive messages. In addition, an ID number is assigned to each MCT unit, which is how the mobile communications vendors identify trucks in each TotalMail fleet.

TotalMail messages are forwarded to and received from trucks via a mobile communications vendor link site. These sites, owned by vendors such as Omnitracs, AMSC, HighwayMaster and Terion, provide the satellite link to communicate with the truck fleet.
